As Kentuckians Get Ready to Vote on Amendment 2, We Need to Define “Education”
What is “education”? Unfortunately, in America we’ve made “education” a synonym for “what is taught in public schools.” And the growing trend in America’s public school system is the pragmatic aim of achieving high test scores and emphasizing subjects that are most likely to land a high paying job.
But what if education is more than that? What if education could help train our children to be wise human beings? What if there’s more to life than getting accepted into a prestigious university and earning a degree in a STEM subject?
For centuries, classical Christian education has relied on the great literature of the Western Christian tradition to teach students not just what to think, but how to think. At its best, this rich tradition has focused hearts on the ideals of truth, goodness, and beauty over pragmatic aims. It recognizes that there’s more to life than entering the next income tier.
However, classical Christian education has recently come under attack as a “dog whistle” for white supremacy. Timothy Paul Jones has recently responded to this claim for World Magazine, and I encourage you to read his defense.
